# What Is AEO (Answer Engine Optimization)? | Infiscroll

> AEO is structuring content so ChatGPT, AI Overviews and Perplexity quote it and name you. What it is, the four free first steps, and what it costs in Pune.

Answer engine optimization is the practice of structuring content so that AI systems (ChatGPT, Google’s AI Overviews, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot) extract it, quote it, and name your business as the source. Every page ranking for this question defines it that way. None of them is written for a business in India, and none of them says what the work costs , so this one answers both.

## What is answer engine optimization?

Answer engine optimization is the practice of structuring content so an AI system can extract a passage from it, summarise that passage, and cite your business as the source of the answer. Google’s own AI Overview on this question gives the same definition, and all eight pages ranking beneath it agree, so treat the definition as settled and the argument as being about everything after it.
One detail inside that definition changes what you do with a website: the unit that gets selected is the passage, not the page . A search engine ranks a document and sends a visitor to it. An answer engine reads several documents, lifts the two or three sentences that answer the question most directly, and writes a reply around them. Your homepage does not compete. The paragraph under one heading does.
The practical shift is that you are no longer competing for a position on a list of ten. You are competing to be the sentence that gets quoted, and there is usually room for three or four sources in an answer rather than ten.

## Which engines are the answer engines?

Yes, ChatGPT is an answer engine, and it is one of six surfaces worth naming. The list below is ordered by how much of an Indian small business’s exposure each one currently represents, and each entry names the single attribute that changes how you optimise for it.
- Google AI Overviews and AI Mode : the answer that appears above the organic results, drawn heavily from pages that already rank for the query.
- ChatGPT : the largest source of AI referral traffic to websites by a wide margin, browsing the live web when asked to.
- Perplexity : built as an answer engine first, citing every source visibly, which makes it the easiest place to check whether you are cited at all.
- Gemini : Google’s assistant, drawing on the same index that decides your organic rankings.
- Microsoft Copilot . Bing’s answer layer, which is why a Bing Places listing is worth the twenty minutes it takes.
- Voice assistants : Siri, Alexa and Google Assistant, which read one answer aloud and never read the second.
Google’s AI Overview on this query names ChatGPT, AI Overviews, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot as the platforms AEO targets: the same five, stated by Google itself. Start with the AI Overview on a query you already rank for , because that is the one surface where the page you already own is the page being read.

## Is AEO better than SEO?

No. AEO does not replace SEO, and the two feed each other. The number that settles the argument is a citation count: research reported by Search Engine Journal and repeated by both Frase and Siteimprove finds that 38% of AI Overview citations come from pages already ranking in Google’s top 10 , down from 76% in earlier studies. Read honestly, that says the link between ranking and citation is loosening, not broken, roughly two in five AI citations still go to a page that earned its position the old way.
*Ranking still decides most citations. Source: Research reported by Search Engine Journal.*
The reason a ranking alone is worth less than it was sits in the other direction. Ahrefs’ December 2025 study of 300,000 keywords found that click-through rate for the first organic result drops 58% when an AI Overview is present . The position survives; the clicks do not. That is the case for doing both rather than choosing.
The table below sets the two disciplines side by side on the four dimensions that change what you actually do. Seven of the eight pages ranking for this question publish a comparison table of their own, and three run to nine or ten rows; four rows is what survives when you remove the ones that describe the same difference twice.
Dimension
SEO
AEO
Goal
Rank a page and earn the click
Be quoted in the answer, click or no click
Unit optimised
The page
The passage under one heading
Measured by
Positions, clicks, impressions
Mentions, citations, AI referral traffic
Success looks like
Position 1 for a keyword
Named as one of three or four sources
Nothing in the right-hand column is achievable while the left-hand column is empty, which is why an SEO company in Pune and an AEO brief are the same conversation held twice.

## Does schema markup actually do anything?

Yes, and less than the advice implies: schema markup is necessary, not sufficient, and it is the cheap half of the job. That is a more careful answer than the market gives, and it is careful because the evidence on this result page contradicts itself.
The consensus is unambiguous. Google’s AI Overview names structuring for machines (clear headings, concise summary blocks, schema markup) as one of three ways AEO works, and eight of the eight pages ranking for this question recommend schema or structured data.
The dissent is on the same result page. A practitioner posting in the r/localseo thread ranking seventh here reports tracking about 25 brands across ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini and finding that the ones being recommended were not the ones with the most complete structured data, but the ones being mentioned in forum threads, comparison articles and review sites. That is one unaudited sample and it is not proof , so it is reported here as what it is: a practitioner observation that runs against the advice.
*Schema is agreed on. It is not the whole answer.. Source: Counted across the eight pages ranking for this question.*
Two things stop it being dismissible. Neil Patel’s published study of more than 80 possible factors behind a ChatGPT recommendation lands on brand mentions, reviews and authority at the top of the list. And Google’s AI Overview concedes the same ground in its own sixth attribute, stating that AEO requires an all-round digital footprint including active mentions on Reddit, YouTube and review sites, because AI engines aggregate data from across the entire web.
The synthesis nobody in this set writes down: do the schema once, because it is a fixed cost and the part you fully control, then spend the remaining effort on being talked about somewhere that is not your own website. For a local business most of that second half is local SEO work in Pune under a different name: an accurate profile, real reviews, consistent details.

## What do you actually do first?

Four steps, in this order, and all four are free. An ordered playbook appears on four of the eight ranking pages, and every one of them assumes a content team, a paid monitoring subscription, or both: one guide requires content, IT, analytics and compliance to be aligned before step one. The four below are what is left when the tooling and the head-count are removed, which is the version most businesses in Pune need.
- Write down the ten questions a customer asks before buying from you, in their words, then ask each one in ChatGPT and in Google. What comes back is your baseline, and it costs an afternoon.
- Give each question its own heading and answer it in the first 40 to 60 words underneath. HubSpot and Frase publish that same 40–60 word window independently of each other, and the reason is mechanical: engines extract passages, so the answer has to be the passage.
- Add the schema once (FAQ, Article, Organization, LocalBusiness) validate it, and then stop thinking about it. It is a one-off job that a developer completes in a day.
- Get mentioned somewhere that is not your site : a complete Google Business Profile, reviews on the platforms your customers already use, and a genuine answer on a forum where your customers ask questions.
Step four takes the longest, and on the evidence in the section above it is the one that counts most.

### What does AEO look like on one real page?

It looks like a question as the heading, one direct answer of about forty words immediately beneath it, the detail after that, and the same question repeated as an FAQ pair carrying FAQPage markup. That is the whole pattern, and it is why the shape repeats down a well-built page rather than appearing once.
The page you are reading is built that way, which makes it checkable rather than theoretical: every heading above is a question, and each one answers itself in its first sentence before it explains anything.

## How do you know whether it worked?

Four things are measurable, and three of the four cost nothing. Every one of the eight ranking pages routes measurement to a paid product, so each metric below is named with its free version: the tools automate this work, they do not unlock it.
- The prompt log : ask your ten questions in ChatGPT and Perplexity on the same day each month and record what comes back. Both Siteimprove and Neil Patel describe this manual baseline before selling the software that automates it.
- AI referral traffic : visits arriving from ChatGPT, Perplexity and other assistants, visible in Google Analytics filtered by source.
- Brand searches . People who heard your name in an answer and then searched for it, visible in Search Console.
- Citations : the subset of mentions that carry a link back to you, which is the only one of the four that shows up as traffic.
None of these is a rank, and none moves in a week. Answer engines retrain and re-crawl on their own schedules, and two people asking one engine the same question can receive different brands in reply.

## What happens when the engine gets your business wrong?

An engine that cannot verify a fact about your business states a plausible one instead, and the fix is editorial rather than technical. One of the eight ranking pages treats this as a topic at all, Neil Patel devotes a section to hallucinated brand information, which is a strange gap in a set otherwise obsessed with being cited.
The consequence lands harder on a small business than on a brand with a thin website, and for a specific reason: when your own site is thin, the corpus an engine checks you against is your directory listings, your Google Business Profile and whatever a review site last said . A wrong phone number in one old directory entry stops being untidiness at that point. It becomes the answer a customer is read aloud.
The remedy is unglamorous. Make the name, address, phone number, hours and service list identical everywhere they appear, then ask each engine about your business by name every few months and correct the source that fed the wrong reply. That is the same listings work local SEO has always required , with a new reason to keep it current.

## AEO, GEO, or the same thing?

The labels overlap and the industry has not settled them. Seobility states outright that answer engine optimization, generative engine optimization and AI optimization all describe one practice under different names, while Frase and Neil Patel place AEO inside GEO as the answer-retrieval layer specifically. This site uses the second convention: AEO is being selected as the answer, GEO is the wider job of being the brand an engine trusts. The GEO post takes that distinction apart properly.

## What can nobody promise you?

Nobody controls what a language model says, so no agency can promise a citation, a place in an AI Overview, or a share of answers. The systems retrain, re-crawl and re-rank on their own schedules, and two people asking the same question can get different brands back.
What can be committed is the work, the measurement cadence, and a report showing the prompt set and what it returned, including the months it did not move. Any quote that promises more than that is describing something outside the seller’s control.

## What does AEO cost in Pune?

₹20,000 a month with a ₹20,000 one-time setup, GST excluded , as published on our pricing page and unchanged from the figures on the AEO and GEO services page . That number is here because not one of the eight pages ranking for this question publishes what the work costs .
One figure does appear in the set, and it is worth naming carefully so it is not mistaken for a price: HubSpot publishes $50 a month for its AEO tool. That is a monitoring subscription. It reports how often engines mention you; it does not restructure a page, write an answer, correct a listing, or earn a mention. It prices the measurement, not the work , and a buyer who compares it against an agency quote is comparing a thermometer with a builder.
*Nobody in this set prices the work. Source: Counted across the eight pages ranking for this question.*
The setup covers the front-loaded part: the entity and schema pass across the site, the answer-format rewrite of the pages carrying commercial questions, and the baseline measurement run everything afterwards is compared against.
The honest alternative belongs here too. The four steps above cost nothing but time, and an owner who works through them and measures for three months will know whether paying anybody is worth it, which is a better position to buy from than this article could otherwise leave you in.

## Who is this actually for?

A business in Pune whose customers now ask an engine before they ask anyone else. That qualifier matters, because the corpus answering this question was not written with such a business in mind.
Not one of the nine pages ranking for “what is answer engine optimization”, and not one word of Google’s AI Overview above them, mentions India, an Indian city, or a rupee. The set is a course platform, a Big Four consultancy, four software companies and two agencies: one American, one Canadian. The advice is not wrong. It is scoped for a marketing team that most businesses here do not have , and priced in dollars where it is priced at all.
What survives the removal of the tooling and the head-count is the four steps above: the ten questions, the answer under each heading, the schema pass, and the work of being mentioned somewhere other than your own site. That is answer engine optimization for a business rather than for a department.
One honest disqualifier to end on. If nobody is asking an engine about what you sell yet, this can wait, and being findable on Google Maps cannot. Start there, and read what GEO adds when the questions start arriving.
FAQ

## AEO: questions answered

Six questions come up most often, and four of them are the questions Google itself lists under this search (which engines count, whether AEO beats SEO, where to start, and what an example looks like) plus schema and cost.
Yes. ChatGPT is an answer engine, alongside Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, Perplexity, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and the voice assistants. Google's own AI Overview on this search names the same five platforms as the ones AEO targets.
No, and the two are not alternatives. Research reported by Search Engine Journal puts 38% of AI Overview citations on pages already ranking in Google's top 10, so a page that cannot rank rarely gets quoted either.
Write down the ten questions a customer asks before buying, in their words, then ask each one in ChatGPT and in Google and record what comes back. That is your baseline, it costs an afternoon, and nothing after it can be measured without it.
A question as the heading, one direct answer of roughly forty words immediately beneath it, the supporting detail after that, and the same question repeated as an FAQ pair carrying FAQPage markup. The pattern repeats down the page rather than appearing once.
Yes, and less than the advice implies. Eight of eight pages ranking for this search recommend schema, while one practitioner tracking about 25 brands across ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini reports that off-site mentions predicted recommendations better than structured data did. Schema is necessary, not sufficient.
Infiscroll charges ₹20,000 a month with a ₹20,000 one-time setup, GST excluded. No page ranking for this search publishes what the work costs; the only figure in that set is a $50-a-month monitoring subscription, which prices the measurement rather than the work.

## Want the work done rather than described?

Infiscroll runs AEO and GEO in Pune at ₹20,000 a month with a ₹20,000 setup. Useful first message: the questions you want to be the answer to, and whether anyone has checked what the engines say about you today.
